For parents and new players — what a tournament day actually looks like, and the one skill every rated player needs: writing your moves down.

How a tournament day works

Arrive 30 min early confirm at the desk
Pairings go up find your board and colour
Rounds run back to back a 5-round day ends late afternoon
Shake hands, press clock phones off, no help from the side
Record every move both players, on the scoresheet
Sign both sheets hand them to the arbiter
Standings after each round posted at the desk

Notation in ninety seconds

Every square has a letter and a number, a–h across and 1–8 up. Each piece has a letter: K king, Q queen, R rook, B bishop, N knight — pawns have none. So Nf3 is a knight to f3, exd5 a pawn capture, O-O castling, + check, # mate.

K Q R B N king, queen, rook, bishop, knight
x capture
O-O · O-O-O castling short and long
+ · # check and checkmate
Watch: how notation works Blank scoresheet

For parents

Bring water and a snack — days are long and venues are quiet, so no spectating at the boards during play.

Losing games is the syllabus. A first tournament at 1–2 out of 5 is a completely normal start.

You do not need an ID or rating to enter an open section — you will get a Chess SA ID automatically after you play your first tournament.

About

A district that takes the game seriously

Dr KK Chess is the official chess region for the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in North West Province, affiliated to Chess South Africa through the North West Chess Association. We run the district calendar and select the teams that represent Dr Kenneth Kaunda at provincial and national level.

Our mandate is simple: every child in the district should have a rated game within reach, and every serious player should be able to build a rating without leaving the region.
